Shiprock passes by

In the northwest corner of New Mexico on the Navajo Reservation, Shiprock stands 1800 feet tall on an otherwise totally flat landscape.  Its Navajo name is Tsé Bit' A'í, which means Rock with Wings.

Navajo storytellers share a legend about Shiprock.

A long time ago the Diné were hard pressed by their enemies. One night their medicine men prayed for their deliverance, having their prayers heard by the Gods. They caused the ground to rise, lifting the Diné, and moved the ground like a great wave into the east away from their enemies. It settled where Shiprock Peak now stands. These Navajos then lived on the top of this new mountain, only coming down to plant their fields and to get water.

For some time all went well. Then one day during a storm, and while the men were working in the fields, the trail up the rock was split off by lightning and only a sheer cliff was left. The women, children, and old men on the top slowly starved to death, leaving their bodies to settle there.

These photos were taken in New Zealand, where schools of old were probably not too different than they were here in the US (well, except maybe for the rules for teachers).  I remember the "cloak room."

Today is an anniversary none of us will forget. These photos were taken on the first anniversary in 2002.

Since we have so recently left the dog days of August, the weather is where my thoughts go when I think "hot." Here in New England, we are having a lovely spell of weather, so I dug into the file for a couple of shots taken on a fairly recent trip to the Arizona desert. It doesn't get much hotter than that.

 This was taken for PhotoHunt, where the theme this week is "numerical."  I despaired of finding anything numerical that was remotely interesting. And then I found this. Perfect!

PhotoHunt: Orange

There are images in nature that defy belief. Were one to paint them in oils, viewers would say, "Oh, that's not realistic." These are some orange things I found hard to believe, even when seeing them with my own eyes.

PhotoHunt: Colorful

Is there anything more frustrating than such a colorful display of fresh fruits and veggies, and there you are without a kitchen?

And almost as bad? Fabulous flowers and no way to take them on the long flight home!

These photos were taken at the wonderful Pike's Place Market in Seattle. What I wouldn't give to have a public market like this near my home.  It's almost enough to make you want to move. Not quite, though. There's still that weather.
